“I cannot tell you how much I owe to the solemn word of my good mother.” ~Charles H. Spurgeon
Our mothers have a very special place not only in our hearts, but also in God’s. They are our first teachers and they carry the responsibility of molding us into becoming the individuals we grow up to become.
My mother was a gift from God to me. She taught me how to love others well. She was one of the most caring, loving, and forgiving human beings I have ever known. She was a great listener and she taught me empathy and compassion. My mother also showed me, by example, what it means to be selfless, humble and to value others more than yourself (Philippians 2:3). My mother was my best friend and I thank God for her. I am the woman that I am today because of her.
I realize, however, that not everyone is blessed in this way. I know many individuals that have strained relationships with their mothers (click here to read “What Can One Do When Mother’s Day Is Painful?). This truly breaks my heart, and I believe it does the Lord’s heart too.
Motherhood is a calling, a privilege and an honor.
God has given mothers a very important role in life. They have the responsibility of teaching their children to become strong, healthy individuals. Starting in the womb there is an attachment that is formed between a mother and her child. This attachment grows as the child develops.
This week, I wanted to honor our mothers. I asked a few of my friends to share what their mothers taught them. I hope their responses would encourage and bless you. My prayer is that this Mother’s Day you would spend some time reflecting on what your mother taught you.
“I learnt to be kind, friendly, hospitable and to enjoy friendships, good food, community and using my gifts to bless others.”~ Jessica
“She taught me that I was precious in my heavenly Father’s sight. That God made me, that I was beautiful, loved me dearly, would protect me, had a perfect plan for my life, would never leave me alone, and was waiting for me in heaven.
Mom also always emphasized how beautiful I was. I needed to strive for holiness and that my body was His temple. And I could always talk to Mom about anything. She and Dad would always love me unconditionally just like God does!” ~Sherry
“Mom also always emphasized how beautiful I was!
“She was fun and had a lot of wisdom from God. She was also a prayer warrior and I know she loved her family. I learned from her to be seeking God, and I learned from her to to be wise with spending money, and praying and waiting on things too.“~ Sue
“What did I learn from my mother? Many things-that the Christian faith is important and going to church is important. Trusting in God is essential in our daily lives. How to be thrifty, to live within my means. That eating healthy is important, but to have treats. If money is lent, don’t ask for it back, to have family time and vacations if possible.” ~ Theresa
“I learned from my mother that trusting in God is essential in our daily lives.”
“She’s a blessing to me. The thing I probably learned the most from her is faithfulness.”~ Julie
“I learned the value of serving others, with love. Even with her own busy household of 7 children, she was always volunteering in her church, supporting friends, offering help to those in need. As a child, I didn’t appreciate the recognition when she was voted WOMAN OF THE YEAR at our church. Now in later years, I am amazed and inspired at the number of lives she touched in a deep way. It was Jesus in her.”~ Maureen
“The most important thing I learned from my Mom was that Jesus loves me. She taught me to read and instilled a love of reading. My mother took me to church every week and it was a highlight of our week. She was an amazing hostess and excellent chef and baker.~ Julie S.
“My mother taught me to persevere through life. We must face things in life and keep moving forward. And to always reach out to God for help and prayer.” ~ Gina
“My mom taught me courage when she sought recovery from her addiction to drugs in alcohol at the age of 61. She taught me compassion by the way she listened and grace by allowing me to share painful things without judgement. She also taught me how to see humor in life as she was one of the funniest people I ever knew. I miss her.~ Will
If you had a mother that loved you, consider yourself blessed. This Mother’s Day may you take some time to reflect on the gift God gave you when He gave you a mother that invested in you and cared for you. If you are a mother yourself, may you tuck deep into your heart how valuable to God and to your child you are. For those of you that are hurting this Mother’s Day, I’m praying for you. I pray for Jesus to cover the wound you may be feeling. He is your Healer, Comforter and Deliverer.
How about you? I would love to hear what your mother taught you. Please feel free to share in a comment below.
“Listen, my child, when your father shows you what is right. And do not forget what your mother has taught you. Their teaching will bring you honour, like a beautiful crown or a valuable necklace.“~ Proverbs 1:8-9 (EASY)
